Ndigiti, Chebor headline AK’s final open track showdown

‎‎The stage is set for a thrilling weekend of track and field fireworks as 2017 World Under-18 10,000m race walk bronze medallist Dominic Ndigiti and reigning national cross country champion Maurine Chebor headline the 3rd Athletics Kenya track and field weekend meeting at the Eliud Kipchoge Sports Complex from February 26–28.‎

Track events on the cards in Kapsabet include; 100m, 200m and 400m sprints, the tactical 800m and 1,500m. ‎

Others are  3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m and 10,000m, as well as the 20km race walk for both men and women. ‎‎

The sprint hurdles (110m for men and 100m for women) will also test rhythm, timing and top-end speed.‎‎In the field, athletes will battle for supremacy in the hammer throw, discus, shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump and triple jump.‎‎

Beyond pride and bragging rights, a lucrative prize purse awaits, with Sh20,000, Sh15,000 and Sh10,000 reserved for podium finishers.

‎‎Chebor arrives in Kapsabet eager to rediscover her cutting edge over 5,000m and 10,000m after a stuttering start to her 2026 campaign. ‎‎

The youngster missed out on a global podium at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, on January 10, placing eighth in the senior women’s 10km race in 33:06. ‎‎Kapsabet now offers her the perfect platform to rebuild momentum and reassert her authority.‎‎

Meanwhile, Ndigiti will be keen to stride into the new season with purpose in the 20km race walk after a relatively quiet 2025.

‎‎The seasoned walker, who has previously showcased his pedigree on the global stage, will be looking to stamp his authority early and lay down a marker for the season ahead.‎‎

Also expected to light up the track is world U-20 5,000m champion Andrew Alamisi.‎‎Importantly, Kapsabet will serve as the final open meet before AK rolls out its inaugural AK Premium Track and Field Meet, an invitation-only showpiece set for May 29–30, 2026.‎‎

“The Kapsabet Meet will serve as the final open Track and Field competition of the season, after which Athletics Kenya will host the AK Premium Track and Field Meet on 29th and 30th May 2026, which will be an invitational event,” AK said in a statement.‎‎

The meet comes hot on the heels of an explosive second weekend showdown at Thika Stadium on January 15–17.‎‎

Veteran sprinter Millicent Ndoro underlined her enduring class in the women’s 100m, powering to victory in 11.3 seconds ahead of Eunice Marandafu (11.7) and Lilian Owako (11.9).‎‎

In the men’s race, Utawala Sprints Club swept the podium, with Ronald Koech storming to victory in 10.2 to outkick Elkana Sabila (10.4) and Moses Wasike (10.6).

‎‎Teenage sensation Mercy Chepng’eno produced a dazzling double, claiming the 1,500m in 4:13.8 before returning to conquer the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:28.9.‎‎

Distance ace Fridah Ndinda also enjoyed a strong outing, winning the 5,000m in 16:31.9 before clocking 34:36.0 to finish second in the 10,000m, underlining her stamina credentials.‎‎

As anticipation builds, AK has wished all competitors well ahead of the Kapsabet showdown.

‎‎“We wish all participants the very best as they prepare and participate at the 3rd open meet in Kapsabet.”

‎‎The federation has also urged athletes to collect their running numbers early.

‎‎“All athletes will be required to collect their running/bib numbers on Wednesday starting from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at the event venue. Please note that registration and issuance of running/bib numbers will NOT be conducted on the event days.”‎
