NAIROBI, Kenya, March 26, 2025 – Team Kenya began their medal quest at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Gainesville, Florida, on a bright note courtesy of Peter Mwangi and Ibrahim Makonjo.
Mwangi grabbed gold in the men’s shot put (40-44 years old) after throwing 14.79m to clinch first place.
American Pierre Brown won silver courtesy of a throw of 13.18m as his fellow countryman, Robert Horton Jr, took the final podium place with an overall throw of 12.71m.
The win is Mwangi’s first ever at an international stage.
His last major victory was at last year’s Kip Keino Classic World Continental Tour where he won the men’s shot put at Nyayo Stadium – under the national events category.
On the other, Makonjo clocked 7.04 to win silver in the men’s 60m dash (40-44 years old).
Makonjo finished second behind winner, American Antoine Echols, who clocked 6.95 for the gold.
Frenchman Antony Couffe took bronze after clocking 7.09.
Makonjo will be in action on Wednesday when he competes in Heat 5 of the men’s 200m.
Also flying the national flag on Wednesday are Regina Malai in the women’s long jump (45-49 years old) and Pauline Wangui in the women’s 3000m (40-44 years old).
