Kevin Chesang produced a composed and determined display to win the men’s 10,000m at the Kip Keino Classic on Friday, clocking 28:31.50.
The 20-year-old had to dig deep in the closing stages to hold off the challenge of Mkulia Kipkandie, who finished second in 28:36.37, while Charles Kiboino claimed third place in 28:37.81.
Although he secured victory, Chesang admitted the race pushed him to his limits.
“Today’s race was tough and I really struggled pushing the pace,” he said.
“However, I’m grateful to have come out victorious.”
The win has boosted Chesang’s confidence ahead of the African Senior Championships in Accra, Ghana, where he hopes to carry his strong form onto the continental stage.
“I’ll be going to the Africa Senior Championships and now that I’ve performed well here, fans should expect a good show,” he said.
Competing at the Kip Keino Classic for the first time, Chesang also revealed plans to return next year in a bid to defend his title.
“This was my first time competing at Kip Keino and next year, I’ll definitely be back to defend my title.”
Runner-up Kipkandie also described the contest as a stern challenge but was satisfied with his podium finish.
“It was a tough race to be honest. I tried my best and I’m happy with a podium place finish because this was my fourth race of the year,” he said.
For Kipkandie, competing at the Kip Keino Classic represented another important step in his development as an emerging athlete.
“Taking part in Kip Keino Classic means a lot to me because it shows I’m part of a pool of upcoming athletes,” he said.
