The 2018 World Under-20 1,500m silver medallist Mirriam Cherop delivered Kenya’s first medal at the ongoing World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, producing a spirited run to claim bronze in the women’s One Mile road race.
Cherop stopped the clock at 4:25.71 to secure third place and hand Kenya a bronze medal as the nation’s road running campaign got underway.
Compatriot Naomi Korir narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fifth in 4:29.15.
France’s Agathe Guillemot stormed to gold in a world-leading 4:22.74, while Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu settled for silver in 4:24.35.
The global podium in Copenhagen crowned what has been an impressive 2026 campaign for Cherop.
She launched her season with victory at the Cross Internacional das Amendoeiras in Portugal on February 8, clocking 31:36 ahead of fellow Kenyan Jackline Rotich (31:50) and Burundi’s Elvanie Nimbona (31:52)
Just six days later, Cherop lined up in the 5km road race in Seville, Spain, where she once again surged to victory in 15:21.
Her winning streak gathered even more momentum on February 22 at the Cannes 10km Road Race in France, where she powered to a 31:24 commanding triumph.
Cherop then switched back to the track for her first stadium appearance of the season at the Kip Keino Classic on April 24, producing a dominant display to win the women’s 1,500m in 4:08.49.

Her second outing on the track came on May 20 in Nerja, Spain, where she settled for second place after clocking 4:02.44, just behind Portugal’s Patricia Silva, who won in 4:02.23.

The only blemish in her rich vein of form came on May 27 at the Canarias Athletics Invitational in Spain, where she finished fourth in the 800m after posting 2:04.59.
She bounced back in style on June 7 at the Abbeville 10km Road Race, finishing runner-up in 30:59.
Cherop’s hopes of wearing the Kenyan singlet at this year’s Commonwealth Games were dashed on June 20 when she placed eighth in the women’s 5,000m at the national trials in 15:33.40.
Nancy Chepkemei won the race in 15:13.72, ahead of Caroline Nyaga (15:17.18) and Rebecca Mwangi (15:18.11).
