NAIROBI, Kenya, June 16, 2025 – Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi delivered a masterclass in front-running at the Stockholm Diamond League on Sunday night, storming to a new world-lead of 1:41.95 in the men’s two-lap showdown.
The 20-year-old controlled the race from the gun and pulled away in the final 200 metres to register the fastest time in the world this year.
Wanyonyi dipped well under the previous mark of 1:42.70 set by Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela in Rabat.
Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati finished second in 1:42.27, while American Josh Hoey claim third place in 1:42.43.
Wanyonyi has now claimed back-to-back victories in the Diamond League circuit following his triumph in Oslo, three days prior to the Stockholm meeting.
In Oslo, Wanyonyi held out a strong charge in the home stretch to claim victory in 1:42.78.
He led Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui (1:42.90) and Sedjati (1:43.06).
He had however opened his Diamond League season with a shocking defeat, finishing third in Rabat after clocking 1:43.37).
Wanyonyi was pleased with running under 1:42 in Stockholm.
“I was very happy to run under 1:42 especially so soon after winning in Oslo,” Wanyonyi said after the race.
In the women’s 800m, World Champion Mary Moraa settled for second after being edged out in the final metres by Great Britain’s Georgia Bell, who claimed victory in 1:57.66.
Moraa clocked a season’s best of 1:57.83, while South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso wrapped up the podium in 1:58.00.
Despite not claiming victory, Moraa was pleased to have run a season best.
“I was very happy with a season’s best of 1:57,” she said post-race.
