‎Tuwei fufils pledge with women coaches

‎Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei says the training of women coaches is part of his pledge to boost female representation in athletics, a plan that includes equipping and certifying more women in coaching roles.

‎On October 18, 44 female coaches successfully graduated from a four-day training programme at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, earning World Athletics Level I certification.

‎Before embarking on the practical sessions, the participants first undertook an online module before proceeding to the hands-on training at Moi Stadium, Kasarani.

‎“This month, Athletics Kenya successfully trained 44 women coaches for Level I certification,” Tuwei confirmed.

‎“The trainees had to undertake safeguarding online certification for World Athletics as a prerequisite for participating in the 40-hour practical training sessions held over four days (15–18 October 2025) at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani,” he added.

‎The AK boss explained that the motivation behind the initiative was to bridge the gender gap in coaching and elevate women’s representation within the sport.

‎“The initiative to train women coaches was driven by a clear recognition of the underrepresentation of women coaches within Athletics Kenya,” he said.

‎“It goes hand in hand with my promise to increase female representation, including training and certifying more female coaches,” he emphasized.

‎Tuwei further noted that empowering female coaches would also play a key role in safeguarding athletes from gender-based violence and exploitation.

‎“Our female athletes need female coaches who can understand and address the unique challenges they face regarding safeguarding, including gender-based violence, exploitation, identity and nurturing young talent through mentorship,” Tuwei stated.

‎“This move is part of our broader strategic drive towards achieving gender equity across all departments within Athletics Kenya,” he added.

‎The AK president lauded the team behind the successful training programme, describing it as a significant milestone on the path to gender parity in athletics coaching.

‎“I thank the AADC team led by Director Ibrahim Hussein, along with all our 12 regions and four affiliates, for contributing to this milestone outcome in our journey towards ensuring gender parity in coaching,” Tuwei said.
