Korir has been in a blazing form at the Betika Athletics Kenya (AK) Cross Country Series but is grateful for Christmas, which offers her a chance to savour her success so far.
“The festive season is here with us and most certainly it is an opportunity for me to rest with family as I prepare to resume training at the beginning of next year. We have the World Championships next year, which will be in September and so it is my hope that I shall make the team,” she said.
The 26-year-old has been one of the standout performers at the Cross Country Series, cruising to victory in Iten and Bomet, both in the women’s 2km loop.
She carried on this scintillating form on Saturday when she clocked 09:09.6 to cross the finish line first, ahead of Africa Championships silver medalist Lilian Odira (09:10.6) and South Rift’s Mirriam Cherop (09:15.4) who came in second and third respectively.
Reflecting on her hot streak, Korir admitted it has worked wonders for her mental fortitude heading into the new season.
“One of the reasons I have been competing in this Cross Country Series has been to improve on my mental health. I am glad that my mental strength has really improved going into the new season and indeed, I am really confident of what lies ahead next year,” Korir, who has competed at two World Championships, commented.
Credit where it’s due
Speaking at the same time, Odira saluted Korir for a race well done, saying she was a worthy winner.
“Give credit to Naomi. This, I think, is her third win in this series. She is a really strong runner and I really wish her all the best going forward,” Odira said.
As pertains to her career growth, Odira is praying her cross country exploits sets her up for further success in the new year.
“This race for me was all about build up. As you know, being an 800m specialist, endurance is very important. So, today was an opportunity for me to continue my build up as I prepare for the next year, in particular the World Championships in Tokyo,” the Kenya Prisons athlete said.
Both athletes will be specialising in the women’s 800m in the upcoming track and field season.
