AK name 30 strong to defend Kenyan dominance at Africa Cross Country Championships

Kenya will be hoping to extend their longstanding dominance at the Africa Cross Country Championships following the naming of a 30-athlete team to fly the national flag at this year’s edition in Hammamet, Tunisia.

The team are a mix of athletes who shone at last year’s Great Chepsaita Cross Country as well as the past weekend’s Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour at Lobo village in Eldoret.

It is also a mix of youth and experience, consisting of starlets who will be making their debut at the international level as well as regulars who have been there and done that.

Notable in the team is the 2018 Valencia 10km champion Sandrafelis Chebet, the 2019 All Africa Games 5000m champion Robert Kiprop Koech, the 2017 World Cross Country mixed relay champion Winfred Nzisa and the 2010 Youth Olympics Games 2000m champion Virginia Nyambura.

Others to keep an eye out for include Gladys Loibach and Diana Chepkemoi who were part of Team Kenya at last year’s World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia.

At the last edition of these continental championships in Chlef, Algeria in 2018, Kenya came away dominant with eight medals – three gold, four silver and one bronze.

All years will be on the class of 2024 to carry on this positive tradition especially with ever-lurking danger from arch-rivals Uganda and Ethiopia.

The team commence residential training on Sunday in Ngong ahead of the competition on February 25.
