Absa Kenya double Kip Keino Classic Sponsorship

Absa Kenya double sponsorship as excitement builds ahead of Kip Keino Classic, Continental Tour Gold scheduled for May 13 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Absa Kenya announced a sponsorship of Sh60 million for the fourth edition of the Kip Keino Classic, up from Sh23m, managing director Abdi Mohamed revealed during the event’s grand launch at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi.   

The sponsorship is set to cater for the athlete’s prize money among other important expenses

Mohamed was speaking when he handed over the sponsorship cheque to Sports Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke and Kip Keino Meet Director Barnaba Korir.

Mohamed said that they will be keen to continue supporting the sport in all the ways we can.


“We shall always chip in where we can because we want to promote sports in the country,” said Mohamed.

Speaking during launch Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei lauded the efforts by Absa for their continuous support of the sport after also pumping in Ksh2 million for the Sikirwa Classic Cross-country in February.

Tuwei also disclosed the country has applied to have Kip Keino Classic upgraded to Diamond League.

“I want to thank Absa for their unwavering support towards the sport. We appreciate their effort,” said Tuwei.

At the same time the organizers disclosed that multiple world and Olympic champion Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce and Africa 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala light up the stadium, American sprinter Sha’carri Richardson will be among the 204 international runners who will grace the fourth edition of the Kip Keino Classic.

Other interesting names set to brace the event include Canadian world 4x100m champions Aaron Brown (9.96) and Jerome Blake (10.00), the 2020 Tokyo and 2022 world 200m silver medallist Kenneth Bednarek (9.89) from USA and African Games 100m silver medallist, Ivorian Arthur Cisse among others.

In the field event, Olympic hammer throw champions Wojcieh Nowicki and Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland spice up the events.
