Olympic medalist Peters eager to make bigger mark at Kip Keino Classic

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 26, 2025 – Olympic javelin bronze medalist Anderson Peters has set sight on a five-star performance at this Saturday’s Kip Keino Classic at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

The Grenadian wants to come away with a better result than the last time when he competed at the World Continental Tour Gold event.

“Last year was quite exceptional…from the weather to the crowd and to the competition. I am excited to see what’s in store this time round, especially with the new venue,” Peters said.

Peters’ maiden appearance at the Kip Keino Classic was in 2023 when he accumulated an overall score of 85.72m to finish second.

The two-time world champion is also looking forward to experience the warmth of Kenyans, who he admits he has fallen in love with.

“I am looking forward to a bigger event this year, especially from the fans who never tired to cheer us all throughout the competition. Their passion and knowledge of the sport were remarkable,” he said.

Peters was speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday morning when he arrived in readiness for the sixth edition of the competition.

The 27-year-old will be competing against familiar faces, one of who is the 2016 Olympic silver medalist Julius Yego.

He is excited about the prospect of sharing the field with a man he considers an idol of the game.

“He is basically an idol in the sport and someone I have looked up to for many years. He sought of paved the way for athletes like us of African descent with his performance at the Olympics in 2016,” Peters said.

Peters has thus far made the podium in the three competitions he has featured in this season.

He began with a first place finish in his homeland, throwing 74.90m at the national championships on March 16.

He then threw 85.64m to finish third at the third leg of the Diamond League in Doha on May 16.

Peters also finished third at Friday’s Janusz Kusocinki Memorial in Poland, throwing 83.24m.
