Youngster Sentura eyes Tokyo World Champs after blistering start to season

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 25, 2025 – Newest kid on the block, Silas Sentura, has set his sights on representing Kenya at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September this year.

The youngster says his immediate target is to attain the qualifying mark for the men’s 5000m, which is 13:01.00.

“Ultimately, I want to be part of the team that will represent Kenya at the Tokyo championships. I am hoping to compete in an international race where my main focus will be to make the qualifying mark for the men’s 5000m,” Sentura said.

The youngster had a Friday to remember when he romped to victory in the men’s 10,000m at the fifth leg of the Betika Athletics Kenya (AK) Track and Field Weekend Meeting at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.

Sentura ran 29:09.49 to cut the tape, ahead of second-placed Festus Kimorwo who clocked 29:09.90.

Victor Kimosop took the final podium place after timing 29:14.04.

It was a victory that took the youngster by surprise considering it was his maiden bow in the discipline.

Silas Sentura (R) receives his cheque of Ksh 20,000.

“The result is beyond my expectations because this is my season opener…not to forget my first ever 10,000m race. I am obviously delighted with the win…I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect start to the season,” he said.

Atieno lights up Ulinzi

It was not only Sentura who had a reason to smile but also Sarah Atieno who became the second Kenyan to ever throw 15m in the shot put.

Atieno threw a personal best of 15.10m to walk home with top honour, ahead of Belinda Oburu (14.50m) and Monica Ruguru (13.26m) in second and third respectively.

In doing so, she followed in the footsteps of Elizabeth Olaba who holds the national record of 15.60m for the past 38 years.

“I am happy to be part of this record breakers club…I know I am agonizingly shy of the national record. However, I am happy and this motivates me to work hard and strive for more,” she said.

Florence Obel was victor in the women’s triple jump, boasting a flight of 12.46m as Idah Jepkorir (12.44m) and Ann Jerono (12.41m) came second and third respectively.
