The third Athletics Kenya Weekend meet heads to Thika Stadium, with over 1,200 athletics have registered for the two-day track and field domestic contest set for Friday and Saturday.
The meeting was initially set for Ruring’u Stadium, Nyeri County but was moved to Thika Stadium after the organizers established that the stadium was not certified to host a competition.
At the last meeting held at Nyayo Stadium, over 1500 athletes participated with sprints entering the biggest number of entrants.
The field events will include long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.
Some of the top athletes expected to compete at the event include national 100m champion Maximilla Imali, Monica Safenia of Kenya Police, Milliencent Ndoro among others.
After Thika meeting, the event will move to Mombasa then Kisii county next month, before paving way for National trials for Budapest World Athletics Championships slated for 14th and 15th July at Kasarani stadium and athletes seeking to compete at this year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary planned for August 19 to 27 are encouraged to use the meetings as part of their preparations.
The events will feature 20 race categories including 100m, 110 hurdles, 200m, 400m 400m/hurdles , 800m, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, 10,000m, 4x 100m and 4x 400m.
