Before you buy running shoes, note that they come in different styles and brands. Runners generally do not care about what pair of shoes they choose. However, certain factors have to be considered.
What type of ground are you running on?
Runners are advised to run on pavement for safety, but running challenges often include off-road paths. There are two kinds of running shoes, one is good for pavement and another is for rugged routes. Road running shoes are apt for paved running courses. They are light and are good at stabilizing your feet on flat surfaces.
Not all running courses are flat and paved though. This is why there are trail running shoes, which are sturdier than the former. Trail running shoes offer greater traction to better stabilize the feet on troublesome surfaces. These shoes are made to withstand encounters with roots, rocks, rough surfaces, and mud.
How do you run?
This seems a silly question, but runners have individual foot anatomies. Some runners have feet that put neutral pressure on the soles, while others put greater pressure on either side of their foot. Check your shoes if the wear patterns on the soles are uniform or concentrated on an area. People with a neutral stride have shoes with heel regions that wear faster. There are runners who tend to run with either supination or pronation action. Supinators are runners who put more pressure on the outer sides of their soles. Hence, their shoes show signs of greater wear along the outer edges. Pronators are runners whose feet put greater pressure on the inner part of the soles, thus having shoes with worn out inner edges.
Running shoes are designed for various types of runners. Those who run with a neutral stride can do with cushioning shoes, which provide high shock absorption. Runners who move with some degree of supination should wear stability shoes, which have a wider range of features aimed at providing greater support. Most trail running shoes are actually stability shoes. Like cushioning shoes, they are also great for neutral striders.
On the other hand, runners with a high degree of pronation should wear motion control shoes, which have more rigid heels.
– Choose shoe size carefully. These shoes are not your everyday shoes. They should fit well; otherwise your running experience would be exasperating.
– Running shoes can last for a few months or a few years depending on your running behavior. Hard runners may have to replace their shoes after 3 months. Note: Replace shoes once their soles are worn out.
– Trail shoes can also be used on smooth roads, but road running shoes are not recommended for off-road running paths. Trail shoes offer greater foothold on rough and uneven surfaces, thus reducing chances of slips and falls.
– Give your new pair of shoes a short run to see if they feel comfortable. Do not wear new shoes for the first time on a race. It is absolutely necessary to try them first.
