NAIROBI, Kenya, March 13, 2025 – Athletics Kenya (AK) have named an elite team of 10 athletes for the World Indoor Championships, set for next week (March 21-23) in Nanjing, China.
The team are a mixture of runners who have represented the country at various international competitions before as well as those set to don the national singlet for the first time.
African 800m silver medalist Lilian Odira, African Games 800m champion Alex Ng’eno Kipng’etich, African Games 5000m bronze medalist Cornelius Kemboi as well as 2018 World Mountain Running champion Purity Gitonga are among renowned athletes who will be flying the national flag at the global competition.
Also back in the Team Kenya fold is the 2022 World Indoor 800m silver medalist Noah Kibet, who has been dominating the podium in the United States as well as the World Indoor Tour.
The 20-year-old was one of the standouts of the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia where, as a 17-year-old, he clocked 1:46.35 to finish second in the one-lap race.
They will be accompanied by a promising crop of foreign-based athletes including Susan Ejore and Dorcas Ewoi (1500m) and Festus Lagat (men’s 1500m).
Ejore will be representing Kenya for the second time following her debut at last year’s Olympic Games where she clocked 3:56.07 to finish sixth in the women’s 1500m.
On the other hand, Lagat failed in his bid to qualify for Paris, clocking 1:45.16 to finish seventh in the men’s 800m at the national trials in June.
Kenya will be betting on themselves to do better than the last edition of the championships, last year, when they returned home with only one medal – a bronze medal by Beatrice Chepkoech in the women’s 3000m.
