The World Under18 preparations move a step closer with Athletics Kenya staging a two-day pre-trial in Eldoret this week.

The youth, born between 2000 and 2001, will have to justify their inclusion in the national team by not only winning in their respective events but also attain the International Association of Athletics Federations standards.

The Athletics Kenya Youth sub-committee, chaired by Nairobi AK branch chairman Barnabas Korir, has been organizing satellite training camps across the country in preparation for the IAAF World U18 that will be held in Nairobi from July 12th to 16th.

The Eldoret mini-trial, to be held at Kipchoge Stadium on Thursday and Friday, will assemble the youth from schools who have been training in Machakos in Southern, Elgeyo Marakwet in the North Rift, Keringet in South Rift and Nandi in the Central Rift.

Barnabas Kitilit, the Youth sub-committee secretary disclosed that the pre-trial, coming ahead of the schools championships, will give opportunities for the U18 to qualify for the trial.

“The trials will strictly be pegged on the performance in the pre-trial and it is important that all the prospecting youth attend the event. It is going to be a prelude to the final selection,” said Mr Kitilit, also the Principal of Kirobon High School in Nakuru.

He said all the regions are expected to bring their teams for event adding that the first eight in every event will qualify for the nationals scheduled to take part on 13th and 14th of June in Nairobi.

The two days pre-trial is organized by the Athletics Kenya Youth Committee in conjunction with Central Rift Athletics Kenya sub-branch.
