Kenya is selecting the International Association of Athletics Federations World Under18 Team on Tuesday and Wednesday during the National Trial at Nyayo National Stadium.
The trial, meant for Youth aged 16 and 17 years, will see the first two finishers acquire the privilege of flying the National Flag during the WU18 championships that are due to run from July 12th to July 16th at Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani in Nairobi.
Already, both the high schools and the primary schools concluded their national championships last weekend in Mombasa and at Moi High School Kabarak in Nakuru where the bulk of those to be tried were selected.
Athletics Kenya President Lt. Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, who is also the Chairman of the Nairobi WU18 Local Organizing Committee, said the two-day trial will enable the country select the best for the World Championships.
“We are choosing our team after this trial. I believe the coaches will bring strong athletes for they will have a task of representing the country at home. All the eyes of Kenyans will be on them”, said the President while inviting Kenyans to the trials and the Nairobi WU18 Championships.
Last month, Athletics Kenya organized a pre-trial for the Youth in Eldoret for two days and those who topped the chart will be among those picked for the trial expected to be a Baptism of fire as the country abounds with youthful talents.
The team that will be selected will go into residential training at Kasarani under a pool of coaches for fine-tuning before the World Championship kicks off officially at the same venue.
Kenya is hosting the 7th biggest sporting event to be held in Africa after Rugby World Cup in South Africa (2005), Cricket World Cup in (2003), World Youth Championship in Morocco (2005), World Cross Country (2007), 2010 Fifa World Cup that took place in South Africa and World Cross-country championships, Kampala, Uganda (2017).
