The 3rd Athletics Kenya Track and Field Competitions are taking place in Machakos this Friday and Saturday before the athletes break for Christmas.
The competitions are being used in preparation for the Commonwealth Games that will be taking place in Gold Coast, Australia from April 8th to 15th next year.
Athletes eyeing tickets for the coveted Games will have to prove their fitness in the Machakos Meet, organized by AK Southern region, before being invited for selection trials scheduled for mid February next year.
Athletics Kenya Senior Vice President Paul Mutwii is urging runners wishing to represent the country in Gold Coast to prove their seriousness by participating in Machakos in large numbers.
“It is very important for all athletes with ambitions of being in the team to compete in Machakos. We have limited time and this will be our 2nd last Track and Field Meeting before we do the trial,” said the vice president who is also in charge of competitions.
A high profile turn-out is predictable with athletes from the disciplined affiliates and surrounding Athletics Kenya branches showing interests in using the competitions in judging themselves.
Olympic Bronze medalist Margaret Nyairera, Olympic silver medalist Boniface Tumuti and Africa Senior 5,000metres champion Douglas Kipserem are among the elite runners expected during the two-day showbiz before the Christmas festivities.
This is the third Track and Field Meeting organized by Athletics Kenya after Kisumu hosted the opener on 17th and 18th November and Kisii on 1st and 2nd December this year.
The 4th competitions, earlier programmed for December 29th and 30th, have been postponed to a date to be confirmed.
The trials for Commonwealth have been brought forward to 16th and 17th February from March 8th-10th. Kenya is expected to send a strong contingent to the quadrangular Games.
