World Champions Helen Onsando Obiri and Elijah Motonei Manangoi have been shortlisted for the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federation Athlete Of the Year Award trophies.

The duo has been nominated alongside 18 others for the prestigious coronation following their impressive performance in this year’s World Championships in London and in the Diamond League series abroad.

Obiri, also the Olympic 5,000metres silver medalist, is among three African women in the list of ten nominees to be considered for the Female Athlete of the Year after winning her specialty during the August championships in the British capital.

She will be facing it out with Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana and Caster Semenya of South African in a gala that also has brought on board Sandra Perkovic of Croatia, Sally Pearson of Australia and Ekaterini Stefanidi of Greece.

Other women in the contest are Brittney Reese (USA), Maria Lesitsekne (ANA), Nafissatou Thiam (BEL) and Anita Wlodarczyk (POL).

In the men nominees list, Manangoi will be facing nine other contenders for the IAAF Male Athlete Of the Year after clinching a gold medal in London in men’s 1,500metres.

The two are the only Kenyans floated for the annual event that will be held on Friday November 24th in Moncco after the IAAF family vote for candidates of their choice in the two categories.
