The Athletics Kenya National Cross Country Championships got a major boost up after the Lotto Foundation sponsored this year’s edition to the tune of Ksh12 Million.
Handing over the sponsorship chegue to Athletics Kenya officials at the Federation’s Headquarters at Riadha House on Friday, Lotto Foundation Chairman Brian Waluchio paid tribute to sports men and women for their explicit role in marketing the country.
“We take pride in being associated with athletics. We shall continue to fulfill our role of sponsoring sport talent development, Health and Education and ask other like-minded Companies to come on board,” appealed the Chairman
Athletics Kenya President Major Gen. Rtd. Jackson Tuwei, who was flanked by Senior Vice President in charge of competition Paul Mutwii, Chief Executive Officer Susan Kamau and Treasurer David Miano, and Executive Member Benjamin Njoga, welcome the sponsorship and invited all Kenyans to the championships slated for February 18th at Uhuru Gardens.
“We are very grateful to Lotto Foundation for the sponsorship and promise that we will account for every cent. We are also asking our fans to come and cheer our teams not only at Uhuru Gardens but also during the IAAF World Championships in Kampala on 26th next month,” said the President during the ceremony.
As opposed to the past when the National Cross-country championships doubled up as an IAAF Permit Meeting, this year, the event will be purely inter-regions with no individual or foreign entrants.
In addition, the selection will be based on the first six across the finish line, ruling out the extension of the wild card to reserved cases which has brought controversy in the past.
The National Cross-country championships, which will include the newly introduced Medley Mixed Relays, will be held on Saturday February 18th and the national team selected during the competitions.
The selected team will proceed to the training camp at Kigari Teachers Training College from 22nd of February to 22nd of March and depart for Kampala on 23rd for the biannual event.
