Athletics action resume this weekend where Kapsokwony High School in Mt Elgon will play host to the 6th Athletics Kenya Cross-Country Meeting on Saturday


All the groundwork has been done with the Western Athletics Kenya Region putting up the final touches in an effort to make the competitions a success.


AK Regional chairman Francis Afundi said despite the event coming very  close to the New and after Christmas celebrations, he expects a good turn-out from the local talents.


“All arrangements have now been finalized for the first Athletics Kenya Cross-Country Meeting in the New Year. The event will be held on Saturday 2nd Jan 2016 at Kapsokwony high School in Mt. Elgon starting at 8.00 am,” said the official.



Mt. Elgon area is another springtide and the cradle of athletics in the country in terms of production in western Kenya.



“Since we are just smarting from the holidays, the local heroes and heroines will participate in the event including legends from the region. But we are also expecting the meeting to entice athletes from outside the region,” added Afundi.



Icons such as the historical Ben Jipcho, Juma Ndiwa, Shem Kororia, James Kwalia (Bahrain), lnnes Chemonge, Leonard Komon, Mangata Ndiwa, Solomon Bushiendich,and Levi Matebo, Milka Chemos hails from Mt Elgon District in Bungoma County among Others.



The Mt Elgon Meeting is the sixth of the Seven Premium Cross-country series and is coming after the fifth Meeting that was held in Machakos on December 19th.



The competitions will start at 8.00 am with the junior women 6Kilometres followed by junior men 8Kilometres and progress to the now revised senior women 10Kilometres and senior men 10kilometres with Athletics Kenya awarding the first 6 finishers in each category.



Other Regions that have been privileged to host the series include Iten in the North Rift, Nyahururu in Central, Kangaru in Eastern and Nairobi for Nairobi Region.


Sotik GK Prison in the South Rift Region will host the last Premium race on January 9th before the competitions move to the grass root and culminate with the Iaaf Permit National Championships on February 13th in Nairobi.
