• Geoffrey Kipkorir Kirui wins the men's marathon athletics event at the 2017 IAAF World Championships London 2017

February 2, 2015

Daniel Kiprono Keitany from Iten discovered the winning format for half marathon while Cythia Limo registered her maiden victory at the Nike Discovery Kenya half marathon staged in Eldoret on Sunday.

Keitany, third during this year’s Family Bank 21kilometres in October, finished in one hour and 5minutes and four seconds just as the 24-years old event is set to mark it’s silver jubilee next year.

The victory is a big boost to Run-fast training camp, one of the youngest athletics training outfit in Iten, after another new catch Peter Emase, cut his running teeth last week during the sister edition of Discovery cross-country in the town.

Silas Sang, another kid-on the blocks, bargained for second place finishing in 1:05.05 while third-placed Afred Rono timed 1:05.20 when last year’s winners Amos Mitei, Allan Kiprono and Robert Kipkorir failed to defend their titles.

In the 10 kilometres organized for the second time this year, Limo took advantage of the absence of inaugural winner Peris Chpchirchir to win with a wide gap ahead of cross-country favourites Purity Changwony and 2000 Olympian Alice Timbilil. The new champion hit the tape in 30:02.0 while Chepkwony and Timbilil arrived in 30:30.0 and 30:48.9 in that format.

The event, started in 1991 by two-times Boston marathon champion and former World half marathon record holder Moses Tanui and Rosa and Associati, will be celebrating 25th anniversary in style.
