GALA TO REWARD ACHIEVERS

November 13, 2015

After illustrious performance during the just concluded competition season, top achievers will be rewarded by Athletics Kenya federation before the end of the year.

And as opposed to the past, athletics fans and the general public have been accorded the opportunity to select the athletes of their choice during the 2015 AK Gala to be held on December 10th in Nairobi.

Disclosing the new voting arrangement during the launch of the event themed “Top of the World Uniting Kenyans” in Nairobi on Thursday morning, the organizers of the annual festival took note of the sterling performance of athletes during the 2015 Beijing World Championships where Kenya topped the medal table.

During the August championships in China, Kenya, for the first time in the history of the global event, won 7 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals, beating favourite United States of America, China and Russia who have been keeping the top overall positions.

“We want to involve the public in terms of voting and contribution towards who become the eventual winners in each category. We are working on a partnership with a media house that will broadcast the event live,” announced Athletics Chief Executive Officer Isaac Mwangi during the launch held at a hotel in Nairobi.

While launching the event, the issue of cheating in the sports did not escape the attention of the federation with Mwangi guaranteeing Kenyans those found to have cheated will not be rewarded as the country step up the fight against the vice.

“The panel will follow the rules of nomination and will not consider anyone who has been implicated or convicted in doping. Nevertheless, the fact that an athlete has failed Anti-doping test doesn’t mean that he or she is going to be convicted of a doping offense. There is a procedure which has to be followed,” clarified the CEO.

Those to be rewarded will include those who performed well during major championship this year and those with exceptional performance in all athletics disciplines.

The Gala, last held in Eldoret in 2013, will feature winners, male and female, in the following classifications;

1. Outstanding performance of the year

2. Comeback Award of the year

3. Cross Country Award of the year
