Athletics action return to Safaricom Stadium this Saturday where a mouth-watering rivalry awaits fans as jostling for tickets to the International Association of Athletics Federation World Relays Championships in Bahamas will be played out.
The Arena, which has remained dormant after the Olympics trials were moved to Eldoret last year, will once again come to life during the invite-only trial set to kick off at 08.30hrs with athletes bein briefed.
Already, the federation has released a list of contesting teams selected during the 5 Relay series held at the Nairobi West Prisons Grounds with unbeaten Mark Otieno and Damaris Akoth anchoring the short Relays.
“The trials are not going to be open. We said from the beginning that we shall select teams from participating individuals and we shall stick to that on Saturday,” affirmed Senior Vice President Paul Mutwii, who is in charge of Technical and Competitions.
Although institutions and the regions will not be fielding teams, there will be stiff contention with perennial antagonists compete on different lanes with the objective of getting selected for the IAAF World Relays programmed for Nassau, Bahamas on 22nd and 23rd April.
Apart from Mark Otieno and Damaris Akoth who dominated in the build-up, Grace Kidake, Mary Tanui, Patricia Isisi, Rose Watakwa and Jacinta Shikanda will steer the women teams while Mike Mokamba, Peter Mwai, Collins Omae and Ferdinand Omanyala will marshal the men’s team.
Before the Relays starts, individuals will warm-up in their specialties where women will open the arena with 100m dash at exactly 10:00hrs followed by men.
