Athletics Kenya (AK) and the National Olympic Committee (NOCK)held a joint meeting on 5th January 2016 to discuss the preparations for the Rio Olympics that will be held later in the month of August. The team of top officials from both organizations were led by the President AK Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei and President NOCK Dr. Kipchoge Keino. The meeting discussed key areas including the quota for the athletes for team Kenya, the National trials, Residential Camp, International Competition calendar for athletes, eligibility and qualification period, the Marathon team, accreditation among other areas of focus.


The accreditation process for athletes who will take part in Rio 2016 has already started and will be closed on 29th March 2016. The Sports entries for Kenya will close on 15th June 2016. The meeting also agreed that the advance party for Rio 2016 will depart from Nairobi on 20th August 2016.


Commenting on the meeting the President AK Gen. Rtd Jackson Tuwei noted that this was a very important meeting to plan ahead and ensure that team Kenya was well prepared to represent Kenya in the best way possible and avoid challenges that were faced during the London 2012 Games.


Dr. Kipchoge Keino commended the AK leadership and urged all officials to work together for the Youth of this country and enhance the performance of Team Kenya during the Rio Olympics.
