Kipkemoi, Chepngetich win Barng’etuny Mountain Run Champs

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 18, 2025 – Alfred Kipkemoi and Janeth Chepngetich cruised to victory at the Tinderet Barng’etuny Mountain Run National Championships in Nandi County on Saturday.

Kipkemoi clocked 1:09:04 to win the senior men’s 14km race, ahead of Ken Koros (1:09:33) and South Nyanza’s Richard Omaya (1:09:35) who came in second and third respectively.

The win was a perfect way for Kipkemoi to bounce back from his last race where he narrowly missed out on the podium.

On that occasion, Kipkemoi clocked 1:02:28 to finish fifth at the Bilbao Half Marathon in Spain in October last year.

Meanwhile, African Games 10,000m champion Chepngetich continued her winning streak with victory in the senior women’s 14km.

The 26-year-old cut the tape in 1:23:18 as Mercy Chemutai (1:26:48) and Run2gether’s Mirriam Chepkirui (1:28:04) took second and third respectively.

It was the perfect way for Chepngetich to start her year in what promises to be a busy calendar for her.

The previous year brought with it good tidings for Chepngetich in which she made the podium in every race she competed – save for the national trials for the Paris Olympics.

Her last assignment was November’s Standard Chartered 10km race where she timed 30:56 to finish second.

Saturday’s race is the first leg of the Magical Kenya Trail Series, which is organized by Athletics Kenya and the Kenya Tourism Board.

In attendance were race patron, Tinderet MP Julius Melly, head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Sports PS Peter Tum, and Athletics Kenya president Lt Gen (Rtd)Jack Tuwei.

Winners in both categories walked home with Ksh 500,000 and a heifer whereas second and third-placed finishers received Ksh 200,000 and Ksh 100,000 — along with a heifer and sheep respectively.
