NAIROBI, Kenya, June 26 – Kenya Prisons’ Loice Chemining continued her dominant run in 2025 with victory at the Athletics Kenya (AK) National Championships at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Thursday.
Chemining clocked 31:39.09 to cut the tape in the women’s 10,000m, ahead of Kenya Defence Forces’ (KDF) Cintia Chepngeno who came second after running 32:22.44.
Rebecca Mwangi, also of Kenya Prisons, timed 32:22.85 to finish third.
It was Chemining’s third win of the year, having began with victory at the Kenya Prisons Cross Country Championships in January, during which she clocked 33:09 in the senior women’s 10km.
She also triumphed in the Malaga Half Marathon in March where she stopped the timer at 1:05:46 before victory at the Bangsaen 10km road race in Thailand, two months later.
Nyaruai romps to victory
In the women’s 1500m, African Games bronze medalist cruised to victory after clocking 4:09.68.
The 2021 World Under 20 3000m champion Teresia Gateri claimed second place after timing 4:10.10 as Paris Olympian Vivian Chebet came third in 4:11.30.
The men’s 5000m saw Gilbert Kiprotich take top place after clocking 13:37.06 as Amos Kiprotich (13:37.58) and George Manangoi (13:43.03).
The field events were dominated by the regular faces including pole vault, hammer throw, high jump, long jump and shot put.
Dominic Abunda maintained his stranglehold on the men’s hammer throw, scoring 61.51m to retain his title, as fellow servicemen, Adelbert Museveni (56.15m) and Denis Sakwa (53.17m) had to be content with second and third place respectively.
Roseline Rakamba was heads and shoulders above other competitors in the women’s hammer throw, boasting a dominant throw of 55.64m for the win as Rebecca Kerubo (48.69m) and Nancy Kanini (48.06m) finished second and third respectively.
In the men’s shot put, George Malala followed on from his win at the Kip Keino Classic with, recording 16.44m to claim the national title.
His fellow KDF work colleague, Benson Wachira, scored 15.95m to take second place as former national champion Peter Mwangi took third in 15.47m.
There was another podium sweep for KDF in the women’s shot put, Sarah Okumu leading the way with 15.34m, ahead of Belinda Oburu (15.15m) and Njau Ruguru (14.56m) in second and third respectively.
Another regular, Asbel Kiprop, took top honour in the men’s high jump, soaring 2.10m, to be crowned national champion.
Kenya Prison’s Edwin Too finished second with 2.01m as Abed Kiprotich recorded 1.99m to take third place.
Similarly, KDF’s Faith Jepkemoi jumped 1.70m to win the women’s high jump, ahead of fellow servicewoman, Eucabeth Chepkemoi (1.60m) who came second.
Kenya Prison’s Moureen Wafula took third after soaring 1.60m, as well.
Police on fire in mixed relay
In the men’s 4x400m mixed relay, Kenya Police took home the glory after clocking 3:16.19 in first place.
Kenya Prisons came second after clocking 3:17.97 as KDF finished third in 3:30.13.
The competition continues tomorrow with more races on the cards.
