Big names battle for glory at Betika AK Track and Field meet in Nakuru

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 3, 2025 – Olympic 3000m steeplechase bronze medalists Abraham Kibiwot and Faith Cherotich are among big names penciled in for the fourth leg of the Betika Athletics Kenya (AK) Track and Field Weekend meeting in Nakuru on April 4-5.

The two will be featuring in their first track competitions this year, as the ‘Road to Tokyo’ (World Championships) gathers pace.

Kibiwot will be running in his third competition of the year, having last featured at the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour in February and clocked 31:42 to finish 35th in the senior men’s 10km.

The World 3000m steeplechase bronze medalist will be swimming in new waters – specifically, the men’s 5000m – where he will come up against specialists including Cornelius Kemboi.

The African Games bronze medalist will be keen to resume winning ways following a disappointing outing at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, where he finished eighth in the men’s 3000m.

Another athlete out to erase the memories of Nanjing is Noah Kibet who will be running in the men’s 800m and 1500m.

The 2022 World Indoor 800m silver medalist clocked 1:48.90 to finish fourth in the semi-finals of the men’s 800m at the global competition.

Bett’s huge chance

In Kibiwot’s absence from the hurdles and water jump race, Leonard Bett will be hoping to romp home to victory.

The Bomet native endured a year of injury struggles but is fit as a fiddle and ready to go.

Victory at the Afraha Stadium will put him in right stead to clinch the ticket to Tokyo and don the Team Kenya singlet at the global competition, come September this year.

For Cherotich, this weekend’s showpiece is her first race of the year, her last competitive action coming at the Brussels Diamond League in September last year.

On that occasion, the youngster clocked 9:02.36 to cut the tape in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

With her stock rising by the day, Cherotich will be keen to continue her winning streak in Nakuru.
