All eyes on second edition of Chepsaita Great Cross Country

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 23 – The second edition of the Chepsaita Great Cross Country is scheduled for December 7 at Chepkemel Secondary School in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County.

Speaking during its launch in the past weekend, the event’s patron Farouk Kibet, said the event will not only benefit competitors but also needy children in the local community.

“Our theme for this year is Run and Educate because this event offers young athletes the chance to expose their talents while also giving them an opportunity to better their education through scholarships,” Kibet said.

Proceeds from the competition will go towards the refurbishment of the nearby Chepsaita Secondary School.

The first 100 finishers in each race will receive scholarships to be awarded to needy students in the local community.

Consequently, participants can compete to win a scholarship for themselves, their children or for needy ones in the community.

This year’s edition targets at least 10,000 competitors who will fight for honours across 11 categories of competition.

Other activities on that day will include tree planting to enhance sustainability, free medical camp and showcase of the local community’s cultural heritage.

National Assembly majority leader, Kimani Ichungwa, who also attended the launch, lauded the event as a ingenious way of enhancing development and creating unity.

“This is a great idea because of the great potential that sports has for unifying our people,” he said.

The inaugural edition on December 1 last year saw the 2022 World Cross Country junior champion Ishmael Kipkurui and Edinah Jebitok emerge victors in the senior men and women’s 8km races respectively.

Registration is ongoing with hundreds of school children having already confirmed their participation during Saturday’s launch.
